Four kinds of building on the same block
Chelsea does not have one housing type, it has four, and they sit next to each other. Greek Revival and Italianate row houses from the 1840s through the 1860s on the side streets west of Eighth. Large loft and warehouse buildings from around 1900 to 1930 along the avenues and toward the river. Pre-war apartment houses, including the enormous London Terrace block. And a good deal of post-war and recent construction filling the gaps.
So the first question here is always which of those you are calling from, because almost nothing generalizes across them.

The landmarked side streets
Much of Chelsea west of Eighth Avenue sits inside a historic district. That does not usually affect plumbing inside an apartment, but it matters the moment work touches the exterior, a vent through a front facade or anything visible from the street. Establishing early whether a job crosses that line saves a great deal of trouble later.
Ground floor, and what is above it
The avenues carry a dense run of restaurants and retail with apartments directly above. That arrangement puts a commercial kitchen at the foot of a residential waste stack, which is one of the more reliable sources of trouble upstairs.
