Scale is the defining feature
Tribeca's buildings went up as textile warehouses, produce stores and light industry, mostly between 1860 and 1920. They are heavy masonry and cast iron, with deep floor plates and very high ceilings. Converted, they produce single apartments occupying an entire floor.
That scale changes the plumbing in a way that is easy to underestimate. A full-floor apartment has multiple bathrooms, a large kitchen, often a laundry and sometimes a second kitchen, and all of it has to reach a stack that was put in for a warehouse.

Renovation is the normal condition
A large proportion of the work here is connected to an apartment being reworked, and the plumbing decisions get made at rough-in. The ones that matter most are unglamorous: pitch on the long waste runs, proper venting for fixtures a long way from the stack, and leaving genuine access to valves behind finished surfaces. Those three decide how the apartment behaves for the next twenty years.
Building rules
Most of these are co-ops and condos with detailed alteration agreements: approved contractors, insurance certificates, restricted hours, protection of common areas and lobby, and freight elevator booking. None of it is difficult, but all of it has to be arranged before the first day rather than during the first week.
